Review
13-year-old Alice is not just a skilled pastry chef; since a young age she has trained to be a spy under the tutelage of her uncle, a legend in French espionage circles. Following his death she concentrated on developing her Patisserie skills at her mother's shop; however, recently she's been receiving anonymous assignments. Unsure who's sending them, she nonetheless completes each one.
The latest leads to her mysterious source. As she'd deduced, her uncle is very much alive and had faked his death. He tells her about a dangerous assignment on the luxury Sapphire Express train from Paris to Marseille. She manages to wrangle her way on board as a kitchen hand; now all she has to do is work out who is not what they seem.
A fun whodunit with twists and turns galore. Alice's ability to think on her feet, blend in and create opportunities make her a natural sleuth. However, her age sometimes gets the better of her! The plot is excellent, keeping the reader enthralled with just the right number of characters and competing story threads to obfuscate the truth. Alice is a wonderful heroine too, very much at home in the two worlds she inhabits. A great read.
