    Elinor is in love with Dan—but her father doesn’t approve, saying that they can never marry. Instead, he intends to set her up with a man close to the king. Elinor doesn’t want to marry Sir William—he’s her father’s age! Thankfully, when they meet, she’s able to use her chess prowess to convince him not to accept the betrothal. Instead, he arranges a marriage between Elinor and his son Adam. When Elinor meets Adam, she finds that they have a lot in common, and a marriage between them will be a happy one.

    This is a sweet and romantic tale of compromise and first loves. Elinor’s tenacity comes to the fore as she negotiates with Sir William and manages to find a solution that will make everyone happy. Letting go of her love for Dan eventually leads her to find new opportunities. This book for reluctant readers is short and sweet, edited to a reading age of 7 and with a dyslexia friendly typeface and paper.
