Crumbs

Ella has been out shopping with her dad, buying lots of wonderful things with the money she has saved up. When they stop to buy some lunch, a little one-legged bird hops up to Ella, hungrily looking for some crumbs to eat—but Ella doesn’t have anything to share with the bird.

Meanwhile, Ella notices a man with wild hair and scruffy clothes walking the street nearby asking passersby for spare change. No matter who the man asks, he is greeted only by turned backs and shaken heads. The little bird has started wandering the crowd too, but it doesn’t find any crumbs, only growls and angry words.

Eventually the man stops and sits nearby, and Ella watches as the little bird hops over to him. To Ella’s surprise, the man whispers to the bird and pulls out a small, crumpled paper bag of crumbs and empties it into his hand, feeding them to the little bird. Smiling, Ella’s dad leads her over to the man and invites him to share their lunch with them, just like he was sharing what little he had with the one-legged bird.
