    Review

Pearly, Pig, Pearly’s parents, and her grandfather embark on a brand new adventure in the tiny kingdom of Anachak. Her grandfather lived in Anachak for a time and was friendly with the ruler, King Alung Chu. Pearly’s father is intent on discovering the lost city of Mu Savan, with new satellite data to help them along. However, the expedition has been crumbling from the start.

The original village site is long abandoned, inhabited only by aggressive monkeys who attack newcomers. Only Pearly’s unique language skills can help them, as she’s able to talk to one of the monkeys, Wak Wak, and negotiate their passage.

Shortly after, however, they are taken captive by the local villages. There is a new King, they discover—Alung Chu has gone missing, and his brother Foom Chu has taken the throne. Pearly and her family all firmly believe that something just isn’t right, so they set about gathering information.

Soon enough, both her parents and grandfather disappear, so Pearly and Pig set off to find them. Once again, Wak Wak the monkey helps them, leading them to Mu Savan where the new King is plundering the city’s riches for personal gain. Unsurprisingly, Pearly and Pig are once again captured, and are imprisoned with her family, and in Alung Chu. Here she discovers that the new King turned on his brother when the ancient city was discovered following an earthquake. He has subdued the people using superstition and fear to give himself time to plunder the ancient city.

When escape seemsimpossible, Pearly once again calls on Wak Wak, who orchestrates some amazing ‘monkey business’. Once free, the true King is able to return to the village and, with the animals’ help, banish Foom Chu and reclaim his throne.

An engaging adventure story which will appeal to young lovers of animals, adventure stories, and archaeology. The corrosive effect of avarice and greed are plain to see, making for a wonderful lesson for younger readers.
