    Review

This A-Z guide takes readers on a tour of Australian reefs! The book starts with a brief overview of the different kinds of reef and points out a few Australian reefs (A) on the map. The Great Barrier Reef (G) and Ningaloo Reef (N) each get their own double-page spread. The book also discusses core concepts like biodiversity (B) and provides an overview of coral reefs (C). The rest of the book looks at just a few of the amazing creatures that live in our reefs, from familiar—like Jellyfish (J) and Rays (R)—to unusual—like Violet Sea Apples (V) and Peacock Mantis Shrimp (P).

Each topic has a brief overview in simple, easily understood language for younger readers, and further information is included on the page in smaller text. A search-and-find activity at the end encourages readers to go back over the pages looking for the many species of fish included in the illustrations.

This is a wonderful overview of Australian reefs for a broad age range, discussing how they have developed over millions of years. The delicate, richly-textured paintings in bright colours pop off the page, giving readers a sense of wonder as they learn about our beautiful reefs.
