“Oh, let’s do it!” say Kitty and Katy and Mum when a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle mysteriously arrives in the post. “I have time on my hands,” agrees Dad. Starting in winter with the edges, by autumn they’re almost done, only to discover that one piece is missing. Mum is sure that it must have accidentally gone out with the rubbish, so the Kellys pile into the car to comb through the local tip (“shouldn’t take long”). There they uncover forgotten letters, train tickets, discarded newspapers, and old photos yellow with age, but finding the missing piece is starting to seem like wishful thinking. “Let’s wish, then,” says Katy. As in all of Bob Graham’s work, the beauty here is in the details, with visual perspectives that offer a bird’s-eye view or take us underfoot, wordless sequences letting us in on a secret. Is it sheer luck – or perhaps the power of hope – that creates an ending to the story?

Review
When the Kellys receive a jigsaw in the post from a mysterious sender, there’s only one thing to do—assemble it. As winter turns to spring, then to summer, the puzzle starts to take shape. Eventually, as autumn arrives, Dad makes a terrible discovery—there’s one piece missing! Searching the whole house to no avail, Mum eventually realises that—oh no!—the piece must have ended up in the rubbish.
The family hurries to the recycling centre, sifting through letters and notes, tickets and cards…but no puzzle pieces. Sadly, they head back home…only to come across the piece just lying on the floor in the kitchen! The Kellys happily finish the puzzle and write a thankyou note to the mysterious sender—addressed to ‘Sumwear’, as they don’t have an address—and drop it in the postbox outside.
This is a very sweet, subtly funny story about perseverance, spending time as a family, and the joys of jigsaw puzzles! Through the story’s soft, colourful illustrations, readers watch as the puzzle piece—unseen by the characters—is initially lost and eventually tracked back into the house on Dad’s shoe, giving them a unique perspective as they follow the Kellys’ adventure. A wonderful book for story time, or for families to read all together.
