After a catastrophic attempt to ask out his crush, 14-year-old Nelson is desperate for any chance to escape the daily humiliations of his small-town high school. And with his parents taking over a nearby ski lodge, that chance seems to have arrived.

Up at the lodge he discovers a whole new freedom in a world where nobody knows he's a loser and he can be whatever he wants. But reinvention is complicated, especially when a few white lies land you in the middle of an unexpected love triangle which leads you to sign up for a ski race that you're nowhere near good enough for.

As Nelson's new world spirals out of control, he'll slowly discover that no matter where you are, sometimes the hardest thing to run away from is yourself.

    Review

Fourteen-year-old Nelson lacks confidence and spends most of his school days being picked on. It's a situation that has grown worse since his best friend Pat moved away.

His parents run hospitality businesses and when they take on a new restaurant at the Mount Doon ski resort it soon becomes clear they will be away from home nearly all season. To keep himself occupied on the weekends, they insist that Nelson competes in the Whittaker Classic, an annual ski race.

Nelson isn't very keen until, during his first weekend at the lodge, he meets Juliet, a pretty girl from Melbourne. The two hit it off and that week, when he returns to school, he is filled with a new confidence that gives him the impetus to verbally eviscerate the bully whose been hassling him for years.

The next weekend he meets another girl -- Adele. She is also from Melbourne and her family stay at the lodge every second weekend, on the alternate weekend to Juliet's family. Before Nelson knows it, he is spending each weekend with either Juliet or Adele and neither one knows about the other.

Matt, one of the staff members at the lodge who thinks there's nothing wrong with being a sleaze, encourages Nelson to enjoy the situation. At the same time, Robyn, an older staff member who becomes friends with Nelson, tries to guide him in the right direction.

It all begins to unravel when Nelson discovers Adele is also racing in the Whittaker, which means both girls will be at the lodge on the same weekend.

To hide from them, he borrows someone else's ski gear, and the event organisers mistake him for a missing competitor in the under 30s comp. Nelson comes third, but when he takes off his helmet his masquerade is revealed and he is disqualified. When he has to face the girls--who by now have worked out what Nelson has been up to--he realizes how much he's hurt them both, and how his choices are his responsibility, despite the poor advice he's received from Matt.

Nelson realizes that it is up to him to decide who he is and how he is going to treat the women in his life. He has essentially reached the pivotal moment, where the choices he makes will determine the type of man he is going to be in the future. When he returns to school, word of his exploits in the ski competition has got around, and suddenly the people who thought he wasn't worth their time, want to be his friend -- but do they really know who he is?

Loosely based on the author's own experiences, this is an enjoyable read with a powerful yet gently delivered message about personal responsibility, the choices we make, the way we treat those around us, and how those things determine the adult we will ultimately become.

    Content Notes

    1. Nelson is publicly humiliated by Dale Dickson, the class bully, who falsely accuses him of "wanking' in class (following an innocent incident where his Skittles fall through a hole in his pants pocket and he is trying to fish them out -- Chapter 2). 2. Language: bloody x 7, pricks x 1 , dickhead x 1. 3. Juliet is jealous and asks Nelson if he is sleeping with the staff girls (he's not!), p193. 4. Juliet doesn't believe Nelson has his own room at the lodge so he takes her there. They kiss before Juliet quickly leaves the room (ch15). 5. Nelson ends up telling Dale Dickson about his love triangle and Dale makes a crass joke that if he "plays his cards right he might end up in a threesome' (chapter 19). 6. Juliet's mum has a drinking problem. 7. Nelson overhears two adult staff members having sex in the shower room (ch17). It's the first time he's been exposed to something like that and it's hard to get it out of his head. 8. Juliet describes to Nelson how awful it is to be treated as some kind of sex object (p314). 9. Nelson looks up to staff member Matt, who is a terrible role model and cheated on his girlfriend with another girl who works at the ski lodge, until he realizes that he does not want to be the kind of man Matt is, and takes responsibility for his own choices.
