Fifteen-year-old Natalie is obsessed with ballet and plans to spend the entire summer in dance class with her two best friends. But when her mom gets a job out of town, Natalie gets shipped off to stay with cousins she barely knows.

Natalie is thrilled when her cousins invite her to join them at the local dance studio. But it turns out it's not a ballet class; it's Irish dance. Skeptical at first, Natalie is surprised to learn she really enjoys the new dance style and agrees to take part in an upcoming competition. But this new passion could result in Natalie having to leave her ballet dreams behind.

    Review

Natalie and her friends Amber and Yumi live and breathe ballet. When Natalie's mother tells her that she's staying with her cousins for the summer, she is devastated; she's going to miss out on the summer session. Fiona, Lissa and Molly are nice, but none of them dance ballet -- they all take Irish-dancing lessons! As a way of keeping up her dancing practice during the summer, Natalie's aunt offers to sign Natalie up for the lessons as well.

Irish dancing seems impossible at first, but soon Natalie falls in love with it. Her ballet training makes it easier for her to pick up the steps and soon, she decides to register for the Rose City Feis -- the local Irish dancing competition! But outside of dance, not everything is so simple. Molly doesn't want to dance, Amber and Yumi are avoiding Natalie's texts, and Natalie's mother is away.

Natalie dances a slip jig at the feis, which goes amazingly, and everything falls into place. She reconciles with her friends -- who thought she was going to leave ballet behind -- and Molly talks to her mother about quitting dance. Natalie's mum is in full support of her new passion and agrees to send her to Irish dance lessons as well as ballet.

A highly enjoyable book about finding your passion and opening yourself up to new experiences. Natalie's struggle to maintain her friendships with Amber and Yumi across the divide of dance discipline and physical distance add a complex and bittersweet note to the narrative. Overall, a great read for any dance-lover.
