As the rehearsal pressures crank up, Ava struggles with her character, with the vocal demands of outdoor theater and with the annoying ego of her castmate Kiefer. But as she learns more about the historical Lily on which her part is based, things begin to fall into place.

    Review

Ava is a theatre geek -- she adores everything about acting and being onstage. So, when a casting call goes out for a summer performance of Doctor Barnardo's Children, she decides to audition. To her surprise and delight, she is cast in the lead role of Lily!

But playing Lily comes with its own unique challenges. She has to connect with her character, find emotional depth, adapt to working within a professional theatre company and, hardest of all, deal with an unlikeable cast member. Kiefer is completely snobby and extremely conceited -- and Ava's opinion of him doesn't change throughout the summer. However, the biggest challenge comes when Ava accidentally breaks her arm at a cast party and jeopardises her role in the process.

With some help from her director and her friends in the cast, Lily puts on a critically acclaimed performance. Although Kiefer isn't praised as highly as her, they come to a place of mutual respect and are able to work together. Lily decides she's definitely going to audition for more productions in future, and the skills and friendships she's gained will help her on the way!

A story of resilience, dedication and friendship, Casting Lily is a fantastic read for lovers of theatre. It's rewarding to watch Ava gain confidence, experience and recognition for her craft.
