A Way with Words

Little Sam doesn’t speak at all. But Sam is always listening and watching and learning, and she does communicate, in her own special way.

Her parents feel confident she’ll develop in her own way, but nobody else seems to understand this, and Sam is often judged, misunderstood, laughed at, and ignored. Despite all this, Sam continues to communicate through paint and music and art, expressing all the things she wants to say while the words build up inside her.  

Then, one day, Sam’s words burst out as she builds an incredible treehouse, hammering the things she wants to say into the woodwork. 

Everyone is bewildered and amazed at Sam’s way with words…and Sam still doesn’t speak. Not once, not at all, not even a little bit.

This story about communication and self-expression has a very important message for young readers. Not everyone in the world communicates the same way, and Sam’s journey reminds readers to be mindful of others, and to understand the importance of all forms of communication, verbal and non-verbal.
