Where do butterflies go at night, when the rest of the world is asleep and no one is looking? A young child ponders this question one day as the sun sets and the beautiful cabbage white butterflies they have been watching dance about the garden begin to disappear. ‘Do they sail in tiny boats on the lake,’ The child wonders, ‘Or maybe sip tea by the glow of the fireflies?’
When the sun eventually rises, the child awakens eagerly, searching the garden for a glimpse of the beautiful butterflies, but they’re nowhere to be found. Hours pass, and eventually the butterflies reappear! The child happily runs out to greet them, and discovers the truth of their nocturnal activities: they were all dreaming, and slept in through the morning!
With gorgeous illustrations full of detail, this is a beautiful story about imagination and the magic of nature. Including an important ‘call to action’ about caring for and conserving native butterfly populations at the end of the book, this is a very sweet and lyrical picture book.
