Deep in the forest, foxes live in an underground city built by the wolves they enslaved. Using the power of speech, they keep the wolves under their harsh rule.

Wolves Isengrim, Hersent and their pups use secret passages to move between the animal and human worlds. When Isengrim is injured, a young boy named Silas comes to his aid. Silas finds speech difficult, but as his friendship with the wolves grows, he must fight to protect his new friends, and find his own voice.

Inspired by the author's own son's difficulty with speech and his love of wolves, Wolfstongue is a beautifully written, thoughtful fantasy adventure that has the feel of a future classic in making.

    Review

This beautifully-written modern fable has its core in the power of words and their ability to both uplift and downcast. Here we see them used effectively by bullies initially, but eventually their power wanes as the victims understand what words can do.

The story follows Silas, a young boy with a speech impediment and low self-confidence who prefers to remain silent than speak in front of others. Constantly bullied, he takes the long way home from school. On a secluded path he comes across an injured wolf and offers it aid. But he soon finds that the wolf's story is more complex than he expected. The wolf comes from a world where scheming, cunning foxes have enslaved the other animals to do their bidding. The wolf and his mate had escaped, hoping for their children to be born free.

The animals can all speak, so Silas can converse quite easily with them when he begins to grow in confidence. Eventually he will become the Wolfstongue, speaking on their behalf, but first he must overcome the linguistic cunning of the foxes. But once he's outmanoeuvred the foxes, he must choose between remaining in the silent world of the wolf or re-joining humanity and regaining his voice.

This is a truly wonderful book which could be read over and over again. Highly recommended.
