Shady snakes, thuggish pigs, a cat in a fur coat and a mystery to be solved. The Free Range Detective Agency is on the case!

Seamus the private investigator is no chicken. He's a turkey. And after the disastrous case of the Rampaging Rhinoceros, his feathers are a little ruffled. This turkey always knew he shouldn’t trust a cat in a fur coat, but when Ms Ermine comes slinking in with a clawful of cash, he just can’t say no. Soon he’s up to his beak in a case involving a sinister snake, pigs with piercings and a meerkat called Elvis.

'I laughed so much I laid an egg. GENIUS.' Dustin the Turkey

A playful and brilliantly funny take on detective noir fiction with an all-animal cast of characters.

    Review

Seamus is a hardboiled private investigator in a rough patch. He's also a turkey. So when a mysterious client -- a cat called Imelda Ermine -- offers him a baffling amount of money to investigate for her, it's an offer he can't refuse -- even though he has a bad feeling about it.

Imelda explains that the Blue Chameleon, the club she sings at, has been caught in an ongoing rivalry with the Clubfooted Pigeon for some time -- and now, weeks have passed without a peep. She wants Seamus to investigate the Pigeon to see if they're gearing up for something big.

As Seamus investigates, he gets embroiled in an increasingly complex mystery. When Maurice Masher, owner of the Blue Chameleon, turns up dead it seems that the Clubfooted Pigeon has made its move. But Simon Snake, the Clubfooted Pigeon's owner, turns up dead next -- so whoever's behind the murders is acting on their own. Seamus is brought in by police for questioning because the murder weapon was his pair of shears, and Seamus realises that Imelda -- who knows about the shears -- is trying to frame him.

After escaping prison and going to ground with his mole friend Doc, Seamus is lured back out by the promise of information -- but it's a setup, and Imelda is behind it. The situation gets out of control and Imelda and her henchman are shot in the struggle. Her henchman dies. Seamus is absolved of his crimes when Imelda confesses -- and with his streak of bad luck broken, it's time to get back on the case!

This is a hilarious take on detective noir chock-full of puns and excellent illustrations. The fun, engaging mystery will have you on the edge of your seat -- and Seamus's bumbling antics will have you rolling off it! A great exercise in inferencing and an entertaining, accessible look at genre.
