    Review

Matthew Buzzington is one special kid—he is able to transform into a fly! At least, he is SURE he is capable of transforming into a fly, he’s just never actually been able to DO it. When his dad gets a new job and moves the family from their small town to the Big City, Matthew Buzzington moans to his sister Amanda how unfair his life is. Amanda replies “Elephant!”,—being a girl of only four years, Amanda has a very limited vocabulary…one word, to be exact.

In the Big City, Matthew Buzzington is miserable: the traffic is noisy, the people are rude, and there are no trees anywhere. But worst of all is Pineapple Johnson (nicknamed for his propensity for putting people in the hospital by throwing pineapples at them). Pineapple doesn’t believe that Matthew can turn into a fly, and he has promised to make Matthew’s life miserable until he can prove it.

When Matthew and Pineapple find themselves locked in the school with a pair of robbers, they discover that they have more in common than they thought, and Matthew will finally prove himself right…by transforming into a fly!

A wonderfully ridiculous story about friendship and believing in others and yourself.

Themes about bullying are communicated subtly yet very effectively, demonstrating how devastating Pineapple Johnson’s treatment of Matthew Buzzington is to the young boy, whilst still maintaining an overall light-hearted and hilarious tone.
