On Thursdays, Nelson, Asha and Mum head out to the bank. But not just any old bank—the food bank. With its shining tins and packets of food stacked from floor to ceiling, Nelson thinks it’s the best kind of bank there is. But there’s a thief in town, and the shelves of the food bank are getting emptier each day, leaving people hungrier than ever.

For the sake of his family and everyone else’s, Nelson needs to make them stop. But can he and his friends really be the ones to catch the bank robber?

    Review

Nelson and his family depend on the local Food Bank to keep them fed. In the days coming up to their next trip, Nelson and his younger sister Ashley play games where they pretend their cupboards are full, and Nelson makes lists of all the fabulous foods he hopes they’ll get. When the Food Bank shelves start emptying out, Nelson and his friends are worried. They’ve heard that someone may actually be stealing from the Food Bank.

When they discover that the Food Bank donations from the local grocery store go into shopping carts by the counter, they plan a stakeout. Their vigilance is rewarded when they catch a couple swapping an empty cart for the full cart destined for the Food Bank. A confrontation ensues as Nelson and his friends try to stop the thieves from leaving the parking lot and, to their surprise, they’re aided by people all around them who want to stand up for what’s right. Nelson and his friends have helped to take down a ring of food bank thieves!

Heart-warming and fast-paced, this book offers a great perspective on the lives of people experiencing food poverty. Nelson and his friends’ plucky antics are highly entertaining, and the sweet core of the story—helping others—sets a universal example. There is information in the back about food banks, breakfast clubs, and how to help people living in food poverty.
