    Review

A young boy is surrounded by a busy city, where everything is loud and noisy and a little lonely. The only exception is the vacant block next to his house. There, the boy has a secret…and a friend: a small patch of trees that looks like an elephant.

Seasons change, and the boy and his ‘elephant’ friend spend their days happily playing. But one day a crew of workers arrive, intending to tear down the trees and pave the empty lot.

Devastated, the boy tries to help his leafy friends escape, to no avail. But, after all seems lost, something miraculous happens: all the trees leave the empty lot! The boy’s friends have escaped to the boy’s schoolyard, preserving a little slice of calm sweetness in the bustling, noisy city.

This wordless picture book tells a sweet story about friendship, doing your best, and appreciating the slower, simpler things in life.

The soft watercolour and pencil illustrations are beautifully detailed, contrasting the tranquil beauty of the empty lot with the hustle and bustle of the city.

The simple story is presented very clearly through these illustrations and holds at its heart a very strong message of the beauty of nature, the importance of quiet time, and the preservation of green spaces in urban settings.
