Stella Connors has spent her whole life bouncing around from one town to the next, following the latest musician her mother has fallen in love with. She has always vowed she will never become a pathetic groupie like her mother, Viv. But then her best friend uploads a video of Stella singing a cover of her favorite band's biggest hit. It goes viral, and suddenly Stella's ideas about who she is and what she wants take a real hit.

As a publicity stunt, the band's manager asks Stella to perform with them when they come to town. Stella is thrilled and agrees immediately. Soon she finds herself in the spotlight, with everyone after her for interviews and photo ops. And unless she's reading things wrong, she's pretty sure the band's lead singer has a thing for her. When she gets invited to go on the road with the band and perform in another concert, Stella forgets every bad thing she ever thought about being a groupie. After all, she's nothing like her mother. She's a star. Isn't she?

    Review

Since Stella was little, her mum, Viv, has disappeared periodically to be a band groupie. Stella has learnt to fend for herself during long periods of abandonment, so it's no surprise when her mum tells her that she is going away to tour with her new boyfriend in South America. Stella is a passionate singer, but she promises to herself that she will never be a groupie like her mum.

One day, Stella is shocked to hear that her favourite band, Razor, has seen the cover she did of their song and is talking about her on live TV. Her video has eight thousand hits, and Razor is trying to get in contact with her so she can join them for their next show. In the next couple of days Stella scores interviews, rehearsals with Razor, and even gets asked by her friend, Max, to join his smaller band. Wilcox. The lead singer of Razor also kisses Stella.

When the night of Razor's show finally comes, she enjoys every bit of it. At the same time, she can't help but feel that she's being used as a publicity stunt. Stella prefers Max's smaller band and doesn't want to live like her mum. She remembers her promise to herself and quits. In the end, Stella realises that her true place is not living with her neglectful mum or following a an overrated band just because they're popular-- it's singing in the spotlight with her best friend Max.

An inspiring read that explores the difficult situations that young artists are thrust into. Stella's experience will inspire teenage audiences to follow their passions, but also warn readers that everyone has an agenda and it's important to remain true to their values. Meeting your heroes is exciting, but it can also be disappointing.
