Three years ago Rob's brother, Adam, was sent to jail for his part in the death of a girl who overdosed at a rave. But now that he has been released, Rob hopes that things can go back to the way they used to be. He soon realizes this is impossible. His brother has changed, the times have changed, and Rob has changed. Adam tells his mom and brother that he is planning to apply to a college in Toronto. He has already discovered how difficult it can be for someone with a criminal record to land a job and thinks he needs to get some education under his belt. He invites Rob to go on a road trip to the city to check out the college.

However, Rob suspects that Adam hasn't asked him along just for company. Adam still believes that there's an easy way to get to where he wants to be. And if Rob can't find a way to save Adam from himself, he just might go down with him.

    Review

Rob promises to his mum that everything is going to be ok when his brother, Adam, is released after two and a half years in prison. In reality, Rob does not know who his brother is anymore, or if he can even forgive him.

In his first week of freedom, Adam visits counsellors and decides that he wants to go back to college. Adam asks Rob if he would like to come with him to Toronto to look at colleges, and they take off on a road trip the next morning. When they arrive in the city, Adam directs Rob to an alleyway so that he can meet up with a friend first. The friend turns out to be from prison, and despite Rob's objections, he is caught up in their illicit activity as they rob a night club.

During the operation, Adam tells Rob that he was not serious about going to college and that he wants to run away after he gets the money for this job. After Rob argues with Adam about his selfishness and his bad decisions, the brothers discover that the whole operation is a set-up and agree to leave without the money.

After their dramatic night, Rob drives Adam to the college and they talk about options for the future. Adam apologises to Rob and promises to never do anything illegal again. When they arrive home, Adam tells his mum that he wants to be an electrician and goes to college a few months later.

Easy Street is a straightforward yet engaging story that encapsulates a realistic and nuanced brotherly bond. The story's twists and turns make this book an intense and enjoyable read.
