Paperback Zack Bernard has a thing for crime shows, especially the forensic-investigation kind. So when his friend Ella goes missing, Zack can't help piecing together what he thinks is concrete evidence that could lead to her whereabouts. The problem is, it's all pointing toward his dad. He knows his dad is lying about not having seen Ella, because Zack saw them together at the mall the day she disappeared. What he doesn't know is why.

With the help of his friend Ayo, Zack tries to solve the mystery himself to avoid having to make the terrible choice between losing someone close to him and betraying his family.

    Review

Zack loves crime shows and he's made a hobby out of solving the mystery before the on-screen detectives. He even wants to be in law enforcement when he grows up. But when his friend Ella goes missing, he is suddenly thrust into the middle of a real-life investigation.

Worse, Zack saw Ella get into his father's car the day she vanished. Zack suspects his dad might be the one behind her disappearance, but he can't tell the police what he knows, because it could cost his dad his job. And his friend Ayo might be right -- what if Ella's just overwhelmed by the first year of university and her controlling mother? She might just be in a remote location with no service. But he also can't leave the investigation alone -- what if Ella is hurt? Or kidnapped?

Soon Zack's investigations uncover more secrets than he's bargained for. His parents' marriage is strained, and his father is cheating on his mother. When he confronts his father about this, he explains that the car was at the mechanic the day of Ella's disappearance. They go to the police, and the truth comes out: one of the mechanics used the car as a rideshare. Ella had been at her father's place with no service the entire time.

Zack's trust in the people around him has taken a severe blow, and he's tired of investigating. Watching mysteries on TV might be fun, but it's a whole different matter when they reveal secrets about the ones you love...

A tense, pacey mystery that examines the importance of being honest with others -- the conflict is driven by the fallout from multitudes of secrets compounding on each other.

At the same time, it's a reminder to that curiosity killed the cat, and that if you look through people's closets, you might find a skeleton. Zack learns that mysteries and crime are much more fun when they're not happening to you.
