    Review

Simon has difficulty controlling his emotions. He uses his uncle Richard’s advice to conceptualise his feelings as little Simons fighting in a boxing ring for control of his body: Simon the Good Student, Simon the Perfect brother, Simon the Arrogant, and Simon the Shameful.
Simon’s had a hard day - his sister is being excluded at school, his best friend would rather play with a bully than with him, and in class, Mr. Louis assigns Simon to work with people he doesn’t like on a project about fish, of all things!

When his emotions get the better of him and he yells at Mr. Louis, Simon is suspended from school. Ashamed, he explains to his uncle Richard what happened. Uncle Richard tells him that though there are a lot of Simons fighting for control, the person in charge is actually the referee. Simon’s emotions are all useful in different situations, and he needs to be in charge of which ones he lets out—and when.

Simon Steps Into the Ring is a vividly-illustrated re-conceptualisation of anger and strong emotion, which gives the reader an easy, visual representation of their emotions and a practical way to manage them. It would be particularly useful for helping students who have trouble controlling their emotions and/or are prone to outbursts.
