    Review

Private Detective PD McPem and her trusty canine Detective Assistant Scooter are very excited—it’s Pet Parade day at West Bay Primary School! With any luck, PD hopes, they will discover a Mysterious Mystery at school, solve it, and everyone will realise that Scooter is clearly the best, most wonderful pet and worthy of winning.

Unfortunately, something unexpected occurs—when PD gets to class, there’s someone sitting in her chair! Theodora Putkins is new to the class, and she is entering her rhinoceros beetle circus in the Pet Parade.

The rest of the class thinks this is very cool, but PD is feeling quite annoyed and just a little jealous. She’s certain that Theodora Putkins must be her arch-nemesis, just like those in Grandpa’s old detective movies.

Soon after, a mystery comes to light! Someone has made a big mess in the art nook, Luke Skyhopper the rabbit’s carrots have been eaten, Katy Purry the kitten’s catnip has been nibbled and, worst of all, Mary the rhinoceros beetle has gone missing! Thankfully, PD is on the case—but where is Scooter? He is missing too!

Together with the other students, PD follows a trail of clues to find the culprit behind the art nook kerfuffle—and is shocked to discover, with the help of a French speaking parrot, that the culprit was actually Scooter! Even worse, there’s a possibility he has eaten Mary the beetle!

PD is very upset, and runs to the cafeteria to talk to Grandpa, who explains that even though some days don’t turn out the way we want, they often end up better than we think.

Grandpa also helps PD discover that Scooter didn’t really eat Mary the beetle—in fact, they have become friends, and Mary has actually hitched a ride with him!

PD tells Theodora the good news, and, just like Scooter and Mary, the two girls soon become friends.

This second book in the delightful PD McPem series, is a funny and relatable story for young readers. PD’s feelings of jealousy when her friends are giving all their attention to Theodora come across in a very relatable way, and the story teaches an important lesson about friendship in its many forms. A sweetly amusing read.
