Being sent to a submarine to help restore extinct sea creatures for summer camp is not exactly Kai’s idea of fun.

Then he discovers a cyborg great white shark in the ocean, but no one believes it could be real. After all, the last shark vanished years ago. Now he must prove the shark exists and save the species. Except not everyone likes the idea of bringing the great white back from the brink.

Join the Ocean Warriors on this environmental adventure. WARNING: contains sea cucumbers, slime eels and a bum-breathing turtle.

    Review

Set in the near future, when the world’s oceans have been plundered of nearly all sea life, this is a tale of avaricious business practices competing with the need for conservation.

School children Kai and Emily are on the species restoration submarine, assisting lead scientist Wendy and her assistant Harry.

They’re on a school environmental placement program. Their aim is to try restocking the ocean with lab-grown fish.

However, a large and very dangerous problem arises when a great white shark with metal fins suddenly appears. All sharks are thought to be extinct—so where did this one come from and why the metal fins?

What seemed like such a big  problem soon turns into an asset as Kai and Emily implant a device on the shark, enabling them to communicate with it. When the Sinister ASF (Association of Sea Fishing) comes after the beast, everyone is ready for a showdown.

A fun, fast paced read with some important conservation and ecological issues raised, which could be easily fleshed out in classroom discussions.
