    Review

How Not to be Popular follows Maddie West as she struggles through year 6. All Maddie wants is to be popular, to hang out with the K-girls and to be the girl school leader for Kangaroo Valley Public School. But Maddie has to decide what is more important to her: being nice to everyone or being popular?

When Maddie is finally accepted into the popular group, the K-girls, she is determined to stay. So determined that, despite her better judgement, at camp she steals the underwear of a fellow classmate, Tahlia, when the K-girls tell her to. Riddled with guilt over the whole debacle, Maddie tries to atone by being friendly to Tahlia when they get back to school.

But nothing will stop the K-girls from despising and bullying Tahlia themselves. They steal Tahlia’s lunch, torment her and tease her. Not only do they continue to bully Tahlia and anyone who isn’t a K-girl, they also begin to exclude Maddie—they run away from her at lunch, stop talking to her at the table and call themselves the K-girls when K isn’t even in Maddie’s name.

The more Maddie tries to fit in with the K-girls, the more she realises that maybe she doesn’t want to. She begins to spend more time with the nice girls, Izzy, Chelsea, Tahlia and Lily; she realises that being popular isn’t actually important at all. The most important thing is to be nice to everyone and hang around people who do the same. This prompts Maddie to finally come clean to her principal about what she did at camp and apologise to Tahlia—honesty is always the best policy. Maddie finishes off Year 6 having learnt so much about herself and with the title of Year 6 girl school leader.

This excellent book is very relevant to any girl in primary school. The author paints a vivid picture of what life in Year 6 is really like and draws on themes of friendship, bullying and doing what is right. Highly recommended.
